How To Create A Compelling Vision For Your Life

Why do you need a compelling vision?

I’ll tell you…

Let’s use a simple vacation as an example. As you’ve probably learned from my story, I live outside of Boston. Occasionally, I enjoy taking a weekend trip to the White Mountains of New Hampshire.

I know that my goal, reaching New Hampshire, is just north of Boston. If I were to get in my car right now and start driving without directions it would probably take me 6 hours to get where I’m going.

For those of you who are more familiar with the area, you’d reach the destination in 2 1/2 hours (the normal time it takes to get there from Boston). But for most of us, without directions we would get lost and need to ask for help.

What if instead of aimlessly driving up to New Hampshire, I decided to use Waze for directions? Well, in that case I’d reach my destination much quicker. This is part of your vision.

Knowing that you’re going to New Hampshire simply isn’t enough. How are you going to get there? Are you driving? Are you using directions? Do you need gas before you go? Will you need to bring food?

These are all the questions you need to ask yourself before you pack up and head off on your adventure. Creating a vision is no different. You must ask yourself the necessary questions first. Stay tuned for next week’s article on this topic.

At the very least, you need to know what it” is that you want and exactly how you’re going to get it.

So how do you create a vision for success?

A vision, if followed closely, will have the ability to change your life forever. But first, it starts with a few steps:

1. Be clear

Make your vision so clear that there is no way you could ever forget it. Make it so precise that when you close your eyes, you can visualize every detail of being exactly where you want to be.

Saying that your dream is to have a red Corvette one day isn’t enough. Be specific. Wanting a 2017 red Corvette Z06 with a 6.2L supercharged engine, 7 speed manual transmission, black leather interior, and convertible with black trim is different than just wanting a red Corvette. If you’re not specific you’ll end up settling for any red Corvette, not the car of your dreams.

How To Create A Compelling Vision For Your Life

Knowing exactly what you want is only half of the battle. You need to have a reason of why you want it and it has to be clear when you want it by. Without a clear purpose and a set date, you’re likely not going to achieve your goal.

I’m sure you’ve heard of Jim Carrey, right? If you haven’t he’s a very successful actor and producer, but he wasn’t always so successful. So how did Jim achieve his dreams?

  1. A clear vision
  2. Hard work and determination

In 1990 Jim was just another struggling actor trying to make his way in Los Angeles. But, Jim had an advantage over everyone else, he understood the importance of a clear vision. While broke and dreaming of his future, Jim wrote himself a check for $10 million for “Acting Services Rendered”dated Thanksgiving 1995.

Long story short, Jim had a monster box office year during 1994 and achieved his goal a year early.

If Jim wasn’t clear about his vision and didn’t set a date on when he would achieve it, he wouldn’t be the movie star he is today.

So if you want to achieve something, you’ve got to have a clear vision of exactly what you want, why you want it, and when you want it to happen.

2. Make your vision a part of you

Become so entrapped in your vision that it becomes part of you. Setting big goals and taking action to achieve them can be daunting. This is exactly why when you create your vision, it has to become a part of your daily routine. Of course, you’ll have days off. Trust me, rest is vital!

But if you really want to be successful, going out to the club every night isn’t going to get you there. Your lifestyle and vision need to be aligned with one another. If you’re trying to save for a house, but you’re going out to eat five times a week – guess what?! You’re not going to achieve your dream!

When trying to achieve your vision, the people you surround yourself with become just as important as your daily routine. Jim Rohn has said “You are the average of the five people you spend the most time with.”

I love this quote because there is so much truth to it. As painful as it might be to hear, the truth is you’re not always going to have the support you need. People will try to talk you out of your goals. They will tell you it’s not possible. Don’t listen to them.

Never let someone talk you out of working towards your dreams because they gave up on theirs.

3. Create goals

Creating a vision simply isn’t enough. You need to have goals too. Without a specific set of goals, your vision will just become a fantasy. It’s okay to have dreams, but I’m not here to help you dream, I’m here to help you turn dreams into reality.

Dreams without goals remain dreams – Denzel Washington

Goals will allow you to take action towards your vision and achieve your dreams. You should have short, intermediate, and long term goals that will act as stepping stones for achieving your ultimate vision. Just as it is important to be specific about your vision, your goals should be well defined too! Especially the short term ones.

Make sure your goals are aligned with your vision. And make sure to check out how to set SMART goals that align with your vision.
